>From the macho-computing-on-macho-machines-dept. Let me briefly report on some newer timings I ran on some nifty up-to-date machines using the timings in GiNaC 0.7.3. The competitors were: an IA-64 (Itanium) machine running at 733MHz, a cheap off-the-shelve Athlon system with 800MHz and a newer Alpha 21264A (known as EV67) running at 677MHz clock speed. All had mind-boggling amounts of memory. The IA64 and the Athlon were running under Linux, the Alpha under Compaq's Tru64. The compiler used was GCC 2.95.2 except on the Itanium where I had to use a newer GCC 3.0 snapshot from CVS. Two tests were omitted because there seem to be bugs in the exception handling of the IA64 compiler and for obscure reasons the Alpha program chose to crash on one test (you won't believe how many compiler problems one sees when doing this kind of stuff). As we all know, computer algebra in practice tends to be code that does a lot branches giving good branch prediction a real chance. Also, the floating point unit usually idles a lot. So, we can expect the Alpha processor to run far from optimal performance. Although the GNU compiler is known not to generate good EPIC code and the IA64 processor is not yet released anyways and the final hardware might differ from the one used here, I find the Itanium timings rather disappointig. Just another release

This is to inform you that version 0.7.2 went out a couple of seconds ago. Q: Is it worth the upgrade from 0.7.1? A: Not unless you are doing some serious stuff with power series expansion. Q: What's going to happen next? A: A major cleanup regarding all things that do not compute is going on. This might also include a more convenient syntax for matrix operations and such things. Q: What do you guys in your spare time? A: Spare time? What's spare time? Q: Will this new version have effects on my sex life? A: Again, if you are doing serious stuff with power series, then it might very well have some effects. Hunting down bugs late at night is known to disturb your sanity. We just did that for you... luck -richy.

Problem with CLN on Alpha

...which is why the announcement for version 0.7.1 didn't go out. It's to be found on the usual places. It is mainly a bug-fix release, but some of the stuff may represent a heavy improvement. In particular, all those folks who were having this or that particular algebraic problem since 0.7.0, please see if it's been solved. Luck -richy. I am using redhat linux 7.0 and have installed CLN. I have downloaded the ginac rpm, but the installer fails to find the CLN libraries. Where should I put CLN so ginac can be installed? Thanks for your help, Dick Fell

Install Problems

Hi there, I hope that you folks aren't too busy to help me out. I am trying to compile GiNaC on a dual pentium III machine. The result of g++ -v is : gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.0) The part where the compiler seems to be troubled is at this stage: c++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -I/usr/local/include -g -O2 -c inifcns.cpp -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/inifcns.lo The message that the machine keeps giving me is: In file included from inifcns.cpp:31: matrix.h:144: non-local function `GiNaC::ex GiNaC::determinant (const GiNaC::matrix &, unsigned int = GiNaC::determinant_algo::automatic)' uses anonymous type If there is more information I can provide please let me know. GiNaC with GUI

Dear all, we wrote a small program called gTybalt, which combines GiNaC, Root and TeXmacs. This yields a graphical user interface to GiNaC. Since the Root-package includes CINT, you basically have the same functionality as ginac-cint. In addition, gTybalt provides routines for plotting functions of one or two variables. The plotting routines are based on Root and are quite fancy. Furthermore by integrating TeXmacs, you get high-quality output, e.g. mathematical formulae are displayed using TeX fonts. TeXmacs is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor and the resulting formulae can easily be converted to LaTeX. At the present stage, the very first alpha-release of gTybalt is available. (This means: Don't expect too much !) You are welcome to visit the web-site http://www.fis.unipr.it/~stefanw/gtybalt.html for more information and the source code. Hi GiNaC's authors! I'm using GiNaC in project for simplifying and normalizing math expressions (and physics, hereafter). My program checks student's solution of math or physics problem without teacher help (teacher need to enter some variants of solution only once). This program will be used for Distant Learning. So, I need to compare two different expressions on identity. I've found out some bugs (or features?) in new version of GiNaC 0.7.0 There they are: When I'm entering command like this: > normal(a^b*a^c, 2); in ginsh or simple c++ code, GiNaC stops to work or exits by Segmentation fault (there is no output). If normalization level == 1, the result is: a^b*a^c. But I need a^(b+c)! Could you explain to me what must I do to correct this? And I have some questions about GiNaC. 1. If I need to normalize expression (a+b)^2 and result must be a^2+b^2+2*a*b. Have I need to call only normal() method or expand() also? 2. Do you planning to include some simple operations with vectors in GiNaC? Also, I'd like to help you in extending GiNaC.
