...here is GiNaC 0.6.3. You may download it from the usual ftp-site. We also provide read-only access through anonymous CVS now! You may set up your local copy somehow like this: $ cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvsthep.physik.uni-mainz.de:/home/cvs login enter the password `anoncvs' $ cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvsthep.physik.uni-mainz.de:/home/cvs -z 9 co GiNaC and later keep up-to-date by simply saying 'cvs update' in your GiNaC directory. Here is what's new in version 0.6.3 (0.6.2 only brought changes related to GiNaC-cint): 1 Derivatives are now assembled in a slightly different manner (i.e. they might 'look' different on first sight). Under certain circumstances this can result in a dramatic speedup because it gives hashing a better chance, especially when computing higher derivatives. 2 Some series expansions of built-in functions have been reengineered. 3 The algorithm for computing determinants can be chosen by the user. See ginac/flags.h and ginac/matrix.h. 4 The Dilogarithm (Li2) now has floating point evaluation, derivative and a proper series expansion. 5 Namespace 'std' cleanly disentangled, as demanded by ISO/EIC 14882-1998(E). 6 Some minor bugfixes, one major lsolve()-bugfix and documentation updates. Item 5 should facilitate a transition to GCC3 once the first beta versions become available. The current status of that project is too fragile to give it a real test. Note also, that Cint 5.14.44 (the current release) seems to be rather broken. For those interested in GiNaC-Cint: please use release 5.14.41, i.e. the 'previous' one, to be found on our FTP-server. I wish to run GiNaC to simplify some very complicated algebraic expressions(Bessel, Legendre,etc. polynomials) and evaluate them, and in order to do that I must first compile cln-1.0.3.tar.gz I am in difficulty doing this. I don't know what the problem(s) is and I would appreciate some help. unique expressions

How can I make an expresion unique? That is, I want it to copy the thing it references not just increment the reference. I envision something like the following pseudocode: symbol x("x"); ex a = pow(x,2)+2*x+1; ex b = a; // make b reference the same thing as a b.make_unique(); // make a new copy of a and reference it with b. There has been a bug in the last version where .normal() was returning wrong results for certain rational functions like 1/(5-4*a)*(-5-2*a-(3+2*a)*(2-5*a)/(-2+a)) which is now fixed. Also, this version features an improved and more flexible scheme for registering functions which makes extensions easier and also allows writing remembering functions in a clean way. Resource Requirements?

Hi, I was having problems getting past the './configure' step on my linux system -- checking for -lcln to be exact. I eventually learned to look at the 'config.log' file and realized the problem. While compiling the test program for the "-lcln" check my system ran out of virtual memory (see config.log snippet and /proc/meminfo data below). However, if I try to compile the test program on my own - outside the 'configure' script - then I have no problems. Any ideas about how to get around this? I could just kluge the 'configure' script since I know '-lcln' works. I'm wondering though if my 233 MHz,32MB RAM linux box isn't going to be able to handle ginac. Any ideas? In the mean time, I'm trying to get ginac installed our Sun Enterprise servers at work but I'm having trouble there too (but I'll tinker with that some more before bugging all of you!) Physics is Phun.

I'm just starting a class project to implement formal manipulation for various functions useful for physics. Just looking at the basis though, I'm not sure whether to implement this as an object with ginac as a component class, or an extension to ginac. The results of my doodling will be released of course. The first means my project is independant of ginac insofar that I don't care about the version unless the interface changes. The second seems more ideologically pure, but implies much patching and such headaches for every version. I'm guessing the first, unless someone wants me to integrate my efforts with ginac, which I'm not sure belong to the project. For reference, some of the functions I plan to implement Sperical harmonics Integration Bessel functions And blah and blah and blah reading out of my mathematics for physicists book. Simplifying sin^2+cos^2

Is there any way I can simplify these within GiNaC to get these terms equal to 1?
