Hi everybody, GiNaC 1.6.0 is out and available. You can find the changes at the end of this email. Note: This release is not binary compatible to the previous one. Also, we changed the name of the library filename from libginac-1.5 to libginac. The ABI versioning is now done in recommended libtool manner. The dynamic library will be created as libginac.so.2.0.0 this time. We also stopped to create extra branches in the repository for ABI compatible versions. The latest releases will from now on always be in master. Changes: * Fixed compilation issues with clang. * Fixed compilation issues with VC++. * Fixed a segfault in fsolve() and improved its numerical algorithm. * Fixed several memory leaks in power::eval(). * Fixed the substitution algorithm that led to wrong results (exp(log(x))->x). * Fixed a bug in add:eval() (real_part() had returned wrong results). * Fixed infinite loop bug when unarchiving realsymbol and possymbol. * Fixed bugs in the GCD code. * Fixed empty string bug in symbol::get_name(). * Fixed bugs concerning STL vector sizes that can potentially cause segfaults. * Fixed a bug in is_polynomial(). * Removed autogen dependencies. * Improved simplify_indexed() algorithm. * Changed the connection between library version and package version. * power::series() can handle now more expressions with singularities in the exponent. * Added conjugate() methods to functions cosh, sinh, tanh. is_polynomial gives strange results

Hi there, I'm a regular user of GiNaC through PyNaC and Sage and I'm usually very happy with it. Good work guys ! However during on of my class I was quite surprised by a result from Sage. I've been able to trace back the result to GiNaC so I'd like to report it here. Note that it's the first time I go into the arcane of GiNaC so I may be wrong. Here is a code that reproduce the problem: #include <iostream> #include <ginac/ginac.h> using namespace std; using namespace GiNaC; int main() { symbol x("x"); ex poly; poly = sqrt(x*x+1)*sqrt(x+1); cout << poly << endl; cout << poly.is_polynomial(x) << endl; return 0; } The output is: popcorn-*/Sage-Work/GiNaC $ ./ginac sqrt(1+x)*sqrt(1+x^2) 1 so that sqrt(1+x)*sqrt(1+x^2) is considered as a polynomial in x ! Here are the standard info: I just installed cln-1.3.2.tar.bz2 and ginac-1.5.8.tar.bz2 from the sources. issues with simplify_indexed()

I've been trying to get a little program of mine to work and well it just doesn't terminate. Somewhere it gets snagged in an infinite loop in the library. I'm pretty sure this is a library bug and I've alerted development but in the mean while has an one encountered this before? Has any one figured out a work around? I've whittled my program down to the smallest most simple component I could get to non terminate. print methods for functions

I would like to customize the latex printing of sin, cos, and tan to be more concise. For example, for an expression like sin(delta), instead of the default: \sin(\delta) I would like it to print: s_{\delta} I read section 6.3.2 in the documentation about print methods for functions, in which there was an example for the "abs()" function. I am confused about what needs to go in abs_eval and abs_evalf -- I tried to run that example and wasn't able to get it to compile. If I only want to change the latex printing for sin/cos/tan, but leave everything else the same as the default, what approach should I take? Should I just copy the code from inifcns_trans.cpp into my own, or is there a way to call REGISTER_FUNCTION in a simple way that only modifies the latex printing? ~Luke

Hello, it seems the error was given by the explicit destructor I wrote for the class rinterval, which I didn't attach in my first mail. Indeed, erasing from the code the destructor rinterval::~rinterval() { min.~numeric(); max.~numeric(); error.~numeric(); } the code works fine. Dear Alexel, even with your suggested correction, it gives exactly the same error. I am confused by the behavior of possymbols in relations. Hello, I'm afraid the logic of this is still beyond me (yes, it might be my mathematical ignorance). I created a class ncsymbol derived from basic (by copying the GinaC symbol class and overloading return_type()) Now I have the following test program --------------- #include <ginac/ginac.h> #include "ncsymbol.h" using namespace GiNaC; int main() { ncsymbol s1("s1", "s1"); symbol x("x"), y("y"); matrix M1(2,2); M1 = x, 0, y, 0; matrix M2(2,2); M2 = 0, x, x, 0; ncsymbol s2("s2"); ex nc; nc = s1 * s2; // Produces a ncmul nc = nc.subs(s1 == M1); // Produces a mul !! nc = M2 * M3; // Produces a ncmul nc = s1 * M2; // Produces a mul !! } ------------------------ 1. Why does replacing a non-commutative object with another non-commutative object result in the ncmul becoming a mul? 2. Hi, the GiNaC info documentation claims: Both symbols and user-defined functions can be specified as being non-commutative. I couldn't figure out how to create a non-commutative symbol, though, except by defining a new subclass of symbol and overloading return_type() Any hints? Thanks, Jan
