A simple proposal: let's not care about release 1.3 so much. It is a waste of time now that 1.4 is out. If there's some really serious issue with 1.3 we can fix it for the 1.3 branch, but only as long as it is still in use by people out there. But making an effort to backport as much as possible appears pointless to me. And as soon as there are radical proposals that break the ABI it would make more sense to branch 1.4.
